What is reiki?

Reiki is a method of healing that uses gentle touch to reduce stress and anxiety and promote relaxation. Reiki practitioners use their hands to transfer energy to your body, helping to balance your energy flow and support healing.

Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui in the early 1900s, and the word "reiki" comes from the Japanese words "rei," meaning universal, and "ki," which refers to the life force energy in all living things. Today, reiki is used worldwide, even in hospitals and hospices, to complement other forms of healthcare. According to Bodner, reiki helps people achieve energetic balance in their physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects.

Health Benefits of Reiki Reiki offers several health benefits, including:

  • Inducing a meditative state.

  • Assisting in tissue and bone healing after injuries or surgery.

  • Stimulating the immune system.

  • Encouraging natural self-healing.

  • Alleviating pain and tension.

  • Supporting individuals undergoing traditional medical treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and kidney dialysis.

Studies have shown that reiki can create feelings of peace, relaxation, security, and wellness.

Can Reiki Replace Traditional Treatments?

No, reiki should not replace consultations with physicians or psychotherapists. Instead, it complements other medical and therapeutic treatments and can enhance their effectiveness. For those in good health, regular reiki sessions can help manage stress and serve as preventive care.

Conditions Treated with Reiki Reiki doesn't target specific diseases but may benefit people dealing with various physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual issues, including:

  • Cancer.

  • Chronic pain.

  • Infertility.

  • Digestive problems.

  • Parkinson's disease.

  • Psychological distress, such as depression and anxiety.

  • Stress-related illnesses.

Reiki can also prepare individuals for surgery and aid in their recovery.

How Does Reiki Work?

Reiki practitioners act as channels for universal life force energy, directing it from their hands to the recipient. The energy flows according to the recipient's needs, ensuring it aligns with their unique requirements.

What Happens During a Reiki Session?

Reiki sessions last around 50 minutes. You remain fully clothed on a massage table as the practitioner gently places their hands on or near specific energy points on your body. They use 12 to 15 different hand positions, with the duration in each position guided by the energy flow. Unlike other touch therapies, reiki doesn't involve pressure, massage, or manipulation.

What Does Reiki Feel Like?

During a reiki session, you might feel sensations like warmth, tingling, or pulsing where the practitioner's hands are. Some people experience energy moving through their body, while others don't notice any physical sensations. Most people feel deeply relaxed and peaceful during reiki, and some even fall asleep during the treatment.
